Baja California Achieves Herd Immunity: One Step Closer to Border Reopening

Nearly 70% of the population is fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

As planned, with the arrival of a new shipment of Pfizer and Sinovac vaccines to Baja California on Wednesday, progress was made in administering second doses to the population of Tijuana, Tecate, and Ensenada.

According to the State Secretary of Health, Alonso Pérez Rico, 53,160 doses of Pfizer and 1,357 of Sinovac were administered yesterday, bringing the total number of people who completed their vaccination process to 54,517.

With these, 1,881,471 people in Baja California have now been fully vaccinated, representing 69.79% of the population, “practically 70% of our population,” said Pérez Rico, who maintained, “We have practically reached herd immunity.”

This Friday, second doses of Pfizer and Sinova vaccines will continue in Tijuana, Tecate, and Ensenada at the following locations:

-Government Center/IMOS (Tijuana) -Lázaro Cárdenas Federal High School (Tijuana) -UABC Otay Campus (Tijuana) -Tecate Health Center (Tecate) -Valle de las Palmas Health Center (Tecate) -Health Services Jurisdiction (Ensenada)

As you may recall, one of Mexico’s main goals was to achieve herd immunity in the northern border states, seeking to lift restrictions on non-essential travel with the United States.

At the time, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard commented that once this immunity was achieved, “there would no longer be a health-related argument to maintain these restrictions.”
